Just days after Stephen announced publicly that he was to retire from rugby he contacted World After Sport to talk through his feelings and his plans when those boots are hung up.
Following a fabulous career playing for Northampton Saints, London Irish, Ospreys and also getting a cap for England Stephen told us he’s “ready” to call it a day.
“After a long career, I feel the time is right to retire, and I’m pleased at how I feel about it. After about 12 months of thinking about it, and being asked about it for a couple of years, I just know in my mind this is the right time”.
So what next for Stephen? Well although his mind isn’t completely made up, finding work in a completely new industry is appealing for a number of reasons. He plans to take a bit more time to assess a few things before making the right decision for him.
With a vast amount of experience in the sporting world, Stephen is looking to see how that may fit into his future too.
We talked through some of Stephen’s ideas and, as we often see, his thoughts are very much looking at roles where communication, drive, targets and people interaction are primary skills that he has developed in sport but can be transferred beautifully into the business world.
There’s still lots to consider, but Stephen certainly seems to be in a good place, and mentally is clear about some of the next steps, things we at World After Sport like to see. When sport has been your life since childhood there’s no doubt it can be challenging to say goodbye to it, so being mentally ready makes that transition so much easier.
Stephen is planning to return to England, so we’ve agreed to meet face to face to talk further, but we wish Stephen every success for his last few games and of course for his future. We are here anytime even if just to talk.
