On a scorching afternoon, we headed to Oval Park, the training venue of Leicester Tigers, with the main plan of meeting with new signing Jimmy Gopperth, who made contact with us to talk about his future transition plans and objectives. Having agreed to arrive a little earlier so we can watch training from afar as we realised it was a closed session and needed to respect the sensitivity of their season preparations.
At the end of training, Steve Borthwick was packing up, so we had a quick chat, and to our surprise and delight Steve invited us to join him on a tour of the facilities, explaining the whys and wherefores of some of the information displayed on the walls, which was fascinating to learn, and to see how messages are shared with the players.
Steve left us to sit down with Jimmy and let him explain some of his current activities, options and ideas. We always feel it’s refreshing to talk to athletes whilst they are still playing/participating, as it shows intent and desire to make their transition as seamless as possible, something we encourage as it studies show it actually enhances performance on the pitch as well. For Jimmy, he has a few years left to play at the highest level, but clearly wants to have his ducks in a row for the future, and we very much look forward to being able to support him in his journey.
